What is Typography?

Typography is the art of manipulating the visual form of language to enrich and control its meaning. It is an essential area of skill and knowledge for graphic designers.

Typography is…

  • The visual component of the written word.
  • The design and use of typefaces as a means of communication.
  • Considered to have begun with Gutenberg and the development of moveable type.

Typography uses typefaces and the whitespace around and through them to create a whole design.

Why is typography important?

There is no doubt about it – typography and the font-faces we choose has a huge impact on multiple aspects of our designs including readability, mood, perceived article length, user experience and much, much more. It is absolutely essential that designers know and understand the different principles of typography that create a pleasing design, in order to properly portray the vision and mood of the website they are designing.
