Typography is the art of manipulating typefaces to enrich and control the meaning. It is an essential skill for graphic design and has a plentiful history of about 500 years and is rich in rules and conventions but is also a place for invention and expression. Typography is thought to start with the development of movable type but has root in handwritten letterform. Typography encompasses everything from calligraphy through digital type and type on the web. Typography is used with the space around it to create a whole design.

There is no doubt about it – typography and the font-faces we choose has a huge impact on multiple aspects of our designs including readability, mood, perceived article length, user experience and much, much more. It is absolutely essential that designers know and understand typography in order to properly portray the vision and mood of a product in the work place.
